Educators' Forum is a twice-yearly gathering for art educators from all levels, and provides a platform for discussions that center on teaching art in the classroom. The focus group provides behind-the-scenes access to curators, artists, and the Museum’s collection. The gathering is free and open to educators across Jakarta and Indonesia.

The 9th Educators' Forum will be held on Tuesday 28 September 2021 at 09.30 – 12.30 (GMT+7).  The event features Farhan Siki (artist and UOB Painting of The Year 2020 Indonesia Silver Award winner) and Evelyn Huang (curator and educator). One year has passed.

The class of 2020 and 2021 have graduated and are continuing to the next level of education. A new academic year has started. Opening ceremonies, introductions, and classes are still being conducted through the screen — at home. The implementation of remote learning based on the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, namely Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh (Government Regulations No. 4 of 2020), requires educators and students to learn to teach through video calls and voice messages — this includes art education.

The advancement in computer technology and digital services have changed the fabric of our current society. In the context of art education, teaching students about technology-based art practices and creative applications of technology are becoming increasingly necessary, not only because technology has created new genres within the contemporary art field (Roland, 1994), but because an understanding of technology can support students to be better prepared for a rapidly changing environment (Heise & Grandgenett, 1996).

Electronic imaging, such as photos, digital illustrations, videos, and even games, sound and coding have become increasingly accessible throughout society and eagerly understood by students. Digital media has changed the way art education is delivered, the way students learn art, and ultimately, how educators understand art education (Al-Radaideh, 2006).

For the Indonesian context, there is an imperative to harness creativity through technology, but as the experience of online learning and teaching over the last 15 months has shown, both teachers and students struggled with remote learning and computer-based teaching. In many situations, in-classroom learning is more ideal especially when physical outcomes are desired. But when physical classes are restricted, some teachers and students still struggle to access the primary teaching devices (cell phones, laptops, and even internet connections). These infrastructure and economic challenges become a barrier for the delivery of quality educational outcomes.

What approaches can educators offer during times of remote learning? Conventional options such as drawing, painting, and sculpting are likely the most practical options with accessible and low-cost materials. How can educators make it interesting yet insightful? As for educators and students with access to devices and a stable internet, what kind of learning can be offered — one that does not simply use the technology but can also trigger creativity?

Over the last 15 months, Museum MACAN has sought to support educators with access to materials and programs. In addition to presentations by some leading speakers, through this Educators’ Forum, we hope to provide a platform to share ideas and generate feedback to continue to deliver quality arts education opportunities throughout our networks.
