About the Program
As awareness of inclusive culture is increasing, many public spaces have been improving their facilities to provide better access and involve communities with special needs in their daily operational practices. Both are crucial to promote diversity as a form of social justice.
In terms of developing physical access, improvements in space design that includes, among others, wheelchair access, special bathrooms, and inclusion of Sign Language and Braille guides have enabled audiences with special needs to access public facilities more independently. There is also a growing movement among private institutions to employ staff with special needs and disabilities. Such initiatives not only open up opportunities for independence and better livelihood, but also encourage public interaction in everyday life.
This edition of MACAN Museum Educators’ Forum explores the theme of "Common Area: Inclusivity and Accessibility in Museums and Public Spaces". Using case studies and experiences from Museum MACAN and local communities, this Forum seeks to discuss and evaluate efforts to include people with disabilities and special needs in a path towards realizing a culture of inclusivity.
