MACAN A to Z provides a brief introduction to subjects in visual art — one terminology at a time — delivered by an expert in the subject. Initiated in 2018, MACAN A to Z consists of a live presentation done in front of live audiences, in which an audio-recording of the presentation is later distributed as a podcast which can be accessed at Museum MACAN's Spotify.
D for Digital Art
Digital art is a general term used to describe art made or presented using digital technology. The first use of the term ‘digital art’ dates back to the early 1980s alongside the introduction of personal computers and throughout the 1990s, rapid improvements in digital technology and artificial intelligence continues to give artists the creative freedom to explore the medium.
In Indonesia, artistic experiments with the digital medium emerged in the 1990s and 2000s. Yet, it was not until the 2010s that we began to witness a significant interest in digital and new media art in the country, as seen in the growing number of artists who incorporate digital and media technology in their works as well as the increasing art galleries and public spaces that open their doors to showcase digital installations.
In the past couple of years, as a response to the pandemic, many artists have resorted to digital technology to produce, exhibit, and enable public interaction with their work. As our life becomes increasingly screen-dominated, this shifting trend in art production, distribution, and consumption through digital technology may indicate a direction of art in the future.
