Museum MACAN and BWI present Design Up Close — a new program series dedicated to the practice and theory of design. Creating links between global designers and local design issues, the program consists of a regular keynote lecture paired with a mentoring and open review program, and keynote presentation led by Indonesian design professionals.

This year, Design Up Close provides six opportunities to see, hear, learn and participate in this exciting new program — students and emerging design practitioners are encouraged to apply to upcoming open calls.

This month, we are hosting a keynote lecture on Design and Contemporary Lifestyle by Christian Tomadini (CEO of Italian design company laCividina). This lecture is co-hosted by Bandung Institute of Technology and supported by ADPII, HDII and Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF). Live streaming is powered by Cisco.

It is human nature to keep searching for a lifestyle that is comfortable for them. Today, there are many lifestyle options people can try to adapt, from minimalist living to mobile residences. The changes of lifestyle in the contemporary society brought consequences into design thinking, process and execution.

As a designer, how do we deal with this ever-changing society, sites and situation? Do we adapt and adjust, do we offer a new option, or do we design something that is versatile to all lifestyle? How do designers prioritize, consider and negotiate the design to fit with contemporary lifestyle?

The cardinal points of contemporary furniture are simplicity, practicality and attention to aesthetics. Therefore, contemporary furniture represents the essence of innovations of the moments. In Design Up Close: Design and Contemporary Lifestyle Keynote Presentation, Christian Tomadini, CEO of laCividina, Italy, will share about what is design in today’s life, the way design responds to support the lifestyle that emerged during the current situation, while maintaining the sustainable factor to reduce negative impact on the environment and health.

This keynote presentation will be moderated by Eugenio Hendro (founder of Eugenio Hendro Design Studio, mentor of Design Up Close: Design and Contemporary Lifestyle).

Christian Tomadini
CEO, laCividina

Christian Tomadini obtained his diploma from technical school and graduated in Engineering Management from the University of Udine. He is registered under the Italian Engineers Register. After graduation, he had 3-year experience in the environment acoustics sector and has worked in the furniture field since 2000. He has served important roles as Production Manager, Plant Manager, and General Manager in companies of the Fantoni group. In 2008, Christian took over the Sales Management of Fantoni, and in the same year he received the National Innovation Award from the Mr. Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic. In January 2012, he was appointed as the General Manager of Moroso SpA for 6 years. From March 2018, he supports Fulvio and Paola, laCividina owners, in the laCividina management.

Jakarta-based designer Eugenio Hendro received a design degree from Institut Teknologi Bandung. His studies focus on designing objects and furniture, merging various cultural contexts, combining new technology with traditional craftmanship in order to highlight multifaceted beauty of the materials and draw renewed attention to small details.
