Initiated in 2020 by Museum MACAN and BWI, Design Up Close is a program series dedicated to the practice and theory of design. Creating a bridge between global designers and local design issues, as well as building platforms and communities to discuss and shape the design industry as a whole. The program consists of a keynote presentation paired with a mentoring and open review program.

Over 2020, Design Up Close have delivered 4 mentoring and open review sessions on 4 topics: Wellness, Design and Contemporary Lifestyle, Material and Sustainability, and Mastering Space, also keynote presentation of Wellness and Design and Contemporary Lifestyle.

Crafting Futures supports the future of craft around the globe. This British Council program strengthens economic, social and cultural development through learning and access. Crafting futures’ projects support practices and people, through research, collaboration and education.

Through international collaboration, Crafting Futures creates new networks and opportunities for shared learning between UK and other countries around the globe. The program supports research and education in craft, ensuring our projects are relevant and the designer and artisan’s access to knowledge and expertise, new markets and new audiences, ensuring the value of crat is appreciated more broadly and knowledge can continue to be shared within the sector.

With increasing global interest on climate change and consumptive economic models in a post- globalised world, the world is looking for alternative approaches to crafts, addressing sustainability across environment, economic and culture through crafts, and explore new economic models, systems and ways of collaborating.

The growing sector around repurposing materials and new materials development have garnered quite a lot of interest — designers and artists in Indonesia are interested about it, and it is an area where the UK has an abundance of leadership and best practice on, yet still have room for learning about alternative ways.

Mentor: Zoe Powell (UK)
Materials Researcher & Designer

Zoe Powell is a materials researcher and designer who focuses on materials and processes in collaboration with communities. Over the years she has explored a multitude of biomaterial, digital and craft fabrication techniques, creatively using resources and tools in parallel with circular design strategies. She has taken part in regional and global projects, teaching at various educational institutions and working with startups, community groups, designers, architects, engineers and scientists.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins BA Textile Design, her career path led her to work as a freelance Designer-Maker in the UK, Peru and Spain, before she took part in the Fabricademy innovative materials course at FabLab / IAAC Barcelona.

Mentor: Abie Abdillah (Indonesia)
Designer, Founder studiohiji

Abie Abdillah is a designer focusing on the usage of natural materials in particular rattan for his designs. He studied Industrial Design at ITB and after he graduates, he started studiohiji in 2009. Combining rattan, an Indonesian traditional material with his contemporary designs. He is also involved with the National Center for Rattan Innovation (Pusat Inovasi Rotan Nasional) facilitating workshops and discussions among designers focusing on rattan.

He received Honourable Mention Winner in Singapore Furniture Design Award in 2011, Rising Design Talents representing Indonesia in Maison Objet Asia 2015, his work has also been featured in Capellini’s collection, a furniture brand from Milan.

Open Call Participant Criteria
1. 18 – 35 years old
2. Fluent in English (reading, speaking, and listening)
3. Final year design student, emerging designers or design enthusiasts with 5 years or less working experience
4. Passionate about design, craft and sustainability
5. Pursuing various roles of career path in design field and its ecosystem
6. Experience in developing a prototype is desired.

Requirements
1. Committed to attend and actively participate in all scheduled mentoring and consultations sessions in March-April 2021
2. Committed to be punctual on every session
3. Committed to develop and complete the prototype within the deadline
4. Committed to attend the open review session, livestreamed and open for public.
