About the Program
Jatiwangi art Factory (JaF) is a community in Jatiwangi, Majalengka, an area known for its clay industry in West Java. Through various artistic activities that involve the local community, JaF has long been building shared values through its resources. Soil as a material forms a collective identity and creates opportunities for innovation in an industry that has turned precarious amid the rapid development.
These innovations and land development efforts have also evolved into an idea of a future city: Kota Terrakota. As a long haul program, Kota Terrakota engages agencies to interact with different spaces and communities. Unit Pelaksana Terrakota Daerah (UPTD) is among the communities that support the movement and growth of Kota Terrakota, serving to accommodate various interests of citizens, communities, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders.
In this discussion session, Arie Syarifuddin — co-curator of the 'Present Continuous / Sekarang Seterusnya' exhibition — and UPTD will discuss about how a sense of belonging of clay is built through various artistic activities, JaF's strategy in processing art spaces, including the museum space, as an effort to convey ideas about a new civilization of clay.
