Conversations about Aceh cannot evade from the long history of violence and human tragedy. Limited access to documentation archives and comprehensive media exposure are among the challenges in an effort to have an in-depth discussion about Aceh and its history. In recent years, there has been a growing initiative from the younger generation to share about Aceh through art, cultural development, and activism.

In this discussion, co-curator Putra Hidayatullah joins artist Arifa Safura to discuss art as a creative approach in the context of Aceh society, particularly how visual art and music become a platform or a starting point to address traumatic historical events and collective memories. This session will also discuss Arifa and DJ Rencong’s practice as self-taught artists whose works are based on memories, personal experiences, and societal influence
