Radical Break: Works from the Museum MACAN Collection
Two significant shifts in art and society are at the center of this exhibition: the proliferation of abstract art in the 1950s and the rise of social activism and counter-culture in the 1960s. Drawn from the collection of Museum MACAN, it includes work that allows us to examine how art drastically transformed in the 1950s and 1960s and includes artists connected to important movements, styles, or intellectual discourses from Indonesia, Japan, the United States and Europe, these are artists who radically altered artistic activity as artists responded to changing cultural, social, economic, and geopolitical landscapes. ‘Radical Break’ includes works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jean Dubuffet, Sam Francis, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, Piero Manzoni, Agnes Martin, I GAK Murniasih, Nashar, Niki de Saint Phalle, Ahmad Sadali, Kazuo Shiraga, Dolorosa Sinaga, S. Sudjojono, and Toshimitsu Imai.
