The presentation at Museum MACAN will feature the multimedia works of all finalists of the 4th VH AWARD, including London-based Grand Prix winner Lawrence Lek; Doreen Chan, who is currently based in Chicago; Paribartana Mohanty, who lives and works in New Delhi; Seoul-based artist Jungwon Seo; and Yogyakarta-based artist Syaura Qotrunadha. Their works engage with technology in new ways and forge new connections, addressing subjects that range from humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence to the pressing social and ecological issues of our time. The award stems from the Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to activate the intersection of art and technology through cross-cultural research and interdisciplinary artistic expressions.

The exhibition at Museum MACAN is part of a series worldwide presentations of the finalists’ work that has included a private screening at the New Museum during Frieze New York, online presentation with Elektra, an international media and contemporary digital art organization based in Montréal, Québec, Canada and an upcoming on-site presentation at Ars Electronica Festival, one of the world’s most important media art festivals.

Established in 2016 by the Hyundai Motor Group, the VH AWARD supports the discovery and exhibition of emerging and new media artists from various Asian contexts. The 4th edition, hosted and awarded in 2021, was the first to expand beyond Korea to include artists whose works creatively portray and reflect the vast array of approaches to media art, occurring across Asia.

As part of the VH AWARD process, each shortlisted artist was awarded a USD 25,000 grant to produce a screen-based, audio-visual work for consideration by the jury, and was invited to participate in an online residency program hosted by preeminent New York City-based art and technology center Eyebeam.
