Join us in a special Online Storytelling Session for children and family. This month's story will celebrate Indonesian Independence Day that is happening this August!

MERDEKA! Stories of the Historic Struggle explores the struggle to Indonesia’s independence through the Independent Collection currently on view and historical multimedia archives accessible to the public. This is an interactive session with light discussion in between-the-scenes. The story highlights the involvement of artists who sought to position themselves as part of society in the newly independent country.

The story begins with the painting by Dullah (1919–1996), Bung Karno di Tengah Perang Revolusi (1966), which highlights Sukarno’s role as the leader of Indonesia’s nationalist movement and his eventual appointment as the nation’s first president. The segment continues with Pertemuan di Tjikampek jg Bersedjarah (1964) and Ngaso (1964) by S. Sudjojono (1913–1986), which focuses on the people who took part in the militia and the situation behind-the-scenes during the struggle for independence.

The story ends with Daughter of Democracy (1996) by Agus Suwage (b. 1959), made 50 years after the proclamation of Indonesia’s Independence and around the birth of the artist’s first daughter. This painting is a symbol of hope for a new generation and a new democracy, it is also a reminder that independence is a continuous struggle that is always worth fighting for.

This Online Storytelling Session will be delivered in Indonesian and is suitable for children from 7–17, family, and Educators.
