About the Program
The artist Agus Suwage reflects on the work of S. Sudjojono (1913–1985), who co-founded PERSAGI. Sudjojono believed that artists have an important social and political role to play, and he himself was present during key moments of Indonesia’s independence struggle. Currently on view is an important work by S. Sudjojono titled Maka Lahirlah Angkatan ‘66 (1966) from the collection of Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik Jakarta, which was the inspiration for a work by Agus Suwage made in 2001 titled Maka Lahirlah Angkatan 90-an (2001), which is included in his major exhibition 'Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me' at Museum MACAN.
In this session, Agus Suwage reflects on S. Sudjojono and his thoughts on the role of the artists in visualizing society and the history of their nation. This is an amazing opportunity to see both important works and to hear commentary from one of Indonesia’s leading artists.
