About the Program
Museum MACAN presents a conversation with artist Chiharu Shiota and Mami Kataoka, Director of Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), in light of the Indonesian launch of Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles, a major survey exhibition overseeing 25 years of artistic practice from the Japanese-born, Berlin-based artist Chiharu Shiota.
The Soul Trembles is Shiota’s most comprehensive solo exhibition featuring works across large-scale installation, sculpture, video performance, drawing as well as documentation of the artist’s performance and theater practice.
The session will start with a lecture delivered by Mami Kataoka, exploring the cosmic view of Chiharu Shiota and the ways the artist expresses her personal thoughts and emotions on intangible subjects such as death, absence, fears, dreams, and silence. Following the lecture, there will be a moderated discussion with artist and curator, reflecting the 25-year of artistic practice manifested in The Soul Trembles, curatorial and working process behind the exhibition and new perspectives that have been gained along the way as The Soul Trembles travel across the globe, including its first show in Southeast Asia.
