CORAL – Coastal Vernacular Lab: Stories from Kalibaru
Join the collaborators of CORAL— an education initiative to explore environmental issues along the coast of north Jakarta through design thinking that involves cross-communities.
CORAL: Coastal Vernacular Lab is an innovative arts education initiative developed by Museum MACAN, in collaboration with Playo and Grundfos Indonesia, with support from the Poul Due Jensen Foundation. This is a pilot project developed as part of the education and community outreach efforts accompanying Olafur Eliasson: Your curious journey exhibition at Museum MACAN.
CORAL brings together design thinking, local knowledge, and cross-community collaboration in finding solutions for environmental challenges affecting communities in Kalibaru, Cilincing, North Jakarta. The program unfolds through several phases: an onboarding and co-creation session, a 14-day on-site designers’ residency in Kalibaru involving community co-design and student workshops that culminates in a public presentation and mini exhibition at Museum MACAN due in late May 2026.
As part of the residency, this session introduces collaborators of the program. Cangkring (Cangkang Kering), a local cooperative based in Kalibaru, as well as three Indonesian design collectives: Labtek Apung, Unconditional Design, and Kampung Kollektief.
