About the Program
Known and admired for her hyper-realistic sculptures of natural and artificial chimeras –organisms composed of genetic tissue from different species– Patricia Picccinini’s work examines new forms of the body and addresses the universal feelings related to connection and intimacy. By portraying imaginary fusions of humans, animals, and other living creatures as well as machines, her works challenge our understanding of what we think are common relationships and question the way we may coexist with different beings.
In Indonesia, this idea of coexistence can also be imagined through ancestral knowledge such as myth and folklore that shape the cultural fabric across the archipelago. Furthermore, it resonates to current global issues around ecology, and its relations with biodiversity and biotechnology, which are also key ideas explored through this exhibition.
