About
Coinciding with the exhibition ‘Stories Across Rising Lands’, this panel discussion presents some leading curators, critics and art historians who will delve into the challenges of articulating narratives of Southeast Asian art, and histories of the region.
The exhibition explores what the curators Asep Topan and Jeong-ok Jeon describe as ‘small narratives’ — which consist of the practices and research approaches by artists towards the everyday and their environments, an approach, that is in contrast to the ‘grand’ perspectives of established histories.
For this panel, we will discuss the approaches, entanglements and possibilities of writing narratives of the region — through an examination of recent projects and research of its panelists.
Panelists:
Farah Wardani (Art historian and curator, Indonesia)
Naraini Juliastuti (Co-founder of KUNCI Cultural Studies Center, Indonesia)
Patrick D. Flores (Art historian; curator; and critic, The Philippines)
Simon Soon (Art historian, writer, and researcher, Malaysia)
Moderated by co-curator of the exhibition:
Asep Topan, Museum MACAN
