Agus Suwage is one of Indonesia’s leading artists whose practice emerged in the lead up to the tumultuous social and political changes in Indonesia in the mid-1990s. His work profoundly expresses the hopes and frustrations of a generation swept up in the fluid shifts of power and identity that were influenced by both national reform and globalization. Refracted through intimate and personal narratives, his work addresses sweeping cultural and political themes and helps us to make sense of the vectors of power and authority which influence how we live now.

The exhibition 'Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me' presents Suwage's personal thoughts and career over the span of 30 years. Going beyond showcasing the exploration of the medium and the creative process practiced by the artist, this exhibition provides a glimpse of Agus Suwage’s diverse interests and artistic endeavors, creating an opportunity for the audience, both museum visitors and creators from other art disciplines, to respond to Agus Suwage's works at the Museum.

As a final note to ‘The Theater of Me’ exhibition, we engage with Agus Suwage to talk about his artistic practice that is inseparable from the social, political, and cultural development in the context of the ‘90s. This discussion will highlight Suwage’s process and interests in arts and the explorations he took in his early works. We will examine the New Order and its impact on the works created during the period, and how the Reformation has changed Suwage’s views on art as well as life. The conversation will end with a reflection on his 30-year practice and ‘The Theater of Me’ at Museum MACAN.
