The Sanskrit word samasta, and the Indonesian word semesta, can be defined as the whole, entire, everything – it is a word that conjures up 'all things’. In English, the term ‘multiverse’ refers to a theoretical scientific idea of a reality that includes an infinite number of parallel universes. It proposes that other universes exist outside of our own. The exhibition Semesta dan Angan/ Multiverses and Dreams brings together a cross-cultural selection of works from the collection of Museum MACAN. These works reveal the diverse perspectives of artists, as they contemplate what is real, and as they express the multiple and subjective realities which make up our understanding of the world around us.

How artists respond to their surroundings is a reflection of both the cultural and social histories of the cities and time periods in which artists produce work. This selection of artwork, from Indonesia, Southeast Asia, North America, Europe, and China highlights the role that artists have played in both harnessing and subverting dominant modes of thinking. It reflects the social and cultural changes occurring across the late 20th Century until now, and many of the urgent conversations about shifts in technology, social and environmental justice, the role of women, racial and economic diversity that artists have negotiated. This mix of viewpoints, across time and culture, engages us as an audience to question our own perspectives and to imagine different narratives for our future.
