Melati Suryodarmo and Laura Romano discuss Sumarah, a Javanese meditation practice that plays an important role in Melati's artistic journey.
25.06.2021
About the Program
Sumarah is a philosophy that departs from a Javanese meditation practice. Literally defined as the attitude of surrendering, the practice of sumarah focuses on emptying oneself, both mind and emotions, to meet the inner voice. In Indonesia, sumarah is categorized as a religious belief.
Can sumarah play a role in difficult times, such as today, when many questions arise because of uncertainties in life? Can we find peace by surrendering?
In this discussion, the speakers will share about the application and role of sumarah in their lives. Born in Italy, Laura Romano will share about her journey in getting to know sumarah during her college break, moving to Surakarta to learn more about the meditation practice, and becoming one of the “guru” of Sumarah in Europe, England and Australia since 1995.
As a performance artist with a career trajectory in performing arts, Melati Suryodarmo has known Sumarah since she was a teenager in Surakarta. Melati will share about her reconnection with sumarah when she studied performance art in Germany, and its role in her artistic journey.
This discussion is part of the exhibition 'Melati Suryodarmo: Why Let the Chicken Run?' in Museum MACAN. Click here for exhibition info.
